Winter Break?

Those of us who follow English football should try to enjoy as much as we can the 2 or 3 seasons of football that remain without a winter break.

Take a look at the calendar and it looks nice. League games today, Saturday and Tuesday. Even though the days when teams played 2 games in 2 days on heavy pitches are gone (and no-one complained), at least we can see interesting games whilst we enjoy our deserved Christmas break.

Only in England, the country that invented the game, can the luxury of games over the holiday be permitted. I remember as a boy, that on Boxing Day I always went to game with my father, brother, uncle and cousins. Whatever the game. It was tradition. We love football, and to be cold for a while watching Northampton against Brentford was to enjoy – being cold just meant the halftime tea or Bovril tasted better and warmed you more. As a teenager Boxing days was derby day, Arsenal v Tottenham, a game never to be missed. I have special memories of a 2 – 0 at Highbury in front of 57,000, or having a tough time getting to White Hart Lane as the Underground didn’t have a full service (apart from the fact that –shit- ground is miles from any station), to see a fantastic 2 – 4 to the Arse. Years later, when I spend Christmas in the UK, we still follow the tradition. Boxing Day, we go to football. No arguments. Not that anyone needs any convincing.

The invasion of foreign managers and players, from cultures where they have a 3 week break over the holidays, will, sooner or later, finish off our English tradition of playing more games at Christmas and New Year. I listen horrified as a player pleads tiredness after just 10 games. I stare open mouthed as Wenger demands a winter break. But I’m not surprised.

Happiness in football is now a precious commodity. It doesn’t really exist. You can still sense a tiny weeny of the child who wants to play day in day out in an English player, or in the fans of clubs like Derby, Leicester, Leeds o Bristol, with their commitment and hope for the future, their faith that this game will be the start of another golden age. That is why, in England, you can have league fixtures at Christmas and New Year. You can play Championship on a Tuesday, even if it coincides with Champions League. You can play the FA cup on a Saturday. You can have a second cup competition in midweek. You don’t see a reduced attendance; you get the same gate, or more.

On the continent, in Italy, in Spain, they have the break. Logical. Why would they play at this time of year? The players certainly aren’t going to demand games. It seems like that once you are a professional, for whatever reason, due to pressure, demands of success, players prefer to play the minimum. The innocence of the child who loved to play all the time, has been crushed by the demand to win. WIN. Not play. WIN. The fans are the same, you won’t see them demanding games over the holiday, maybe only the hardcore few, who, like there English counterparts, still believe in romanticism and that the next game is a new beginning. But the reality is that it’s hard to get fans into the stadiums on a normal weekend. You see swathes of plastic, people constantly complain about times, ticket prices; any excuse is a good one not to go. Then you have the “it’s better those dogs don’t play”, because not every team can win. Set a game for a Wednesday, and lose half your support. Play a cup match and see the gate disappear. Say that we need to reduce the number of teams in Primera and Segunda so they play less, and see them nodding in agreement.

So, enjoy the English football festival over the next few days. I think we have 2, maybe 3 years more before the sad cynicism that rules the game abroad stamps out the little happiness that remains.

Vacaciones

GANAR. No jugar. GANAR.

No monkey on his back). Me desespera.

Old Post : La Giralda? Cardenal Belluga!

Acho......one of my favorite places in Murcia is the Plaza Cardenal Belluga. Although I'm lost to religion many years ago, the side of the cathedral that opens onto the Plaza is quite spectacular, almost leading one to a religious experience. The detail of the stonework, the apostles looking down, the originality, the scale of it, the backdrop of the clocktower that dominates the town.....how did they manage to put it all together so long ago?

Any visitors, I always make a point of showing them this place. I try to make it quite late (a half empty square has it's own sound, an atmosphere almost like you don't have to share the scene with anyone else), an after dinner stroll, always entering from Glorieta, making no build up so nothing is suspected. It's amazing that such beauty isn't very well known - so when they turn the corner onto the square and are confronted with something so special but so unexpected, the moment that the first time observer is stopped in their tracks, open mouthed and wide eyed.....makes me proud of my adopted home.

Just last night, with a business visitor from California, only in Spain for his first visit and only for 24 hours, it again took the breath away.....for both of us.

If I can put a small "but" on the square....it's the Council building directly opposite. I'm not going to do a Prince Charles and call it a "hopeless carbuncle on the face of an old friend", as in itself it's an original and interesting piece of architecture. But it's soooooo out of place......like Tottenham Hotspur in the quarters of the Champions league.

In Search Of The Lost Fans

For the real football fan there has to be uncertainty. Those pre-match butterflies. Fear. Call it what you want. That is what differentiates us from the “new fans” who only follow a winning club, or those who declare a love for the game without any affection for a particular club (these are on the increase – I can them Spectacle-ists). Without defeats or draws, I think real fans would stop going. Without uncertainty, the game becomes a mere procession, and then….why bother to turn up and support and sing, make an emotional investment, when everything is already said and done to 99% probability?

When a competition can only be won by one of the participants, it isn’t a competition any more”. This isn’t a phrase from some philosopher or writer; this just came into my mind on Saturday evening while I observed FC Barcelona dish out yet another thumping to less fortunate opposition. And I say less fortunate, because the distance between Barcelona and Real Madrid and the rest increases each year. I know that Real Madrid aren’t on top form right now but, does anyone really doubt that they will end up either first or second and a considerable distance clear of third?

Barcelona’s 5 – 1 win isn’t that important. What is, worryingly, even for Barcelona, were the empty seats. Canal+’s commentator said around 30,000 free seats at the Nou Camp. I know that people will complain about prices, cold weather or whatever, but I think the problem may be that the football on offer, so admired by many, is turning the real fan away.

Real fans support their teams. So much indeed, that if you cut them they bleed whatever colour they follow. It takes us a week to get over a defeat. But we do understand other club’s real fans. We enjoy our team’s goals and our victories, but we do have a point where we suffer others fans defeats and misfortunes. We have been there. When our team is winning by 3 or 4 goals, we still sing, of course, but we don’t have the thirst for utter destruction I see in the newer fans. I say this as I can see they are approaching sadism. On Saturday I watch wide eyed as Barcelona’s fans booed Alex Song for a missed pass when 4 – 1 up. Or berated the referee for not giving them a soft midfield foul while winning 5 – 1.

These fans seem to want to see a rival destroyed, and that is what they consider a spectacle. That’s fine, but if that is what we want, it needs to be available to all, not just for the privileged few. Like in the NFL or NBA, where the wow factor, the spectacle, is demanded. But there, those in control recognize that seeing humiliation every week isn’t good, so they make sure the weak get a fair crack. The last team gets first pick of the draft, or they exchange that right for proven players they may want. Balance. Uncertainty. Competition.

I consider myself a real fan. I prefer the possibility of a draw or a defeat, but I belong to an ever declining minority. In Spain it is complicated. The sports press are so partial to 2 teams, that they ignore or brush aside all others, making the 2 ever more powerful. These 2 dominate the nominations for the “Balón d’or”, but the third and fourth placed teams cannot compete financially against the 15th placed team in the Premier league, or the 11th placed team in the Bundesleague.

I think we need to be aware of the damage this does to the rest of the league. Abroad people are more like real fans than the spectacle-ists. We have to recognize that football fans abroad, although enjoying Madrid and Barcelona goals, don’t like to see destruction, but do enjoy a tight game. Or said another way, competition. When you compare how much the Premier league and other foreign leagues bring in from outside their own borders, La Liga’s selling power is ridiculously low. The thrashings may sell in countries with a similar demand (no offence), where everyone supports a winning side, like Morocco or Saudi Arabia. But who suffers when La Liga misses out? Yes, the weak. The Madrid and Barcelona snowball just grows and grows.

Real Fans are turned off as the competition……isn’t really a competition any more.

Real Murcia 0 Real Madrid B 0

I know it's a boring subject but.......Real Murcia really shouldn't have to face Real Madrid's B team. I mean....no other professional league let B sides adulterate their competition, but then I suppose we shouldn't be surprised as the people who run the game in Spain are ineptitude personified.

An injury hit Real Murcia did well and probably deserved to win agianst a talented Madrid B side.

Real Murcia :
Javi Jimenez – Molinero – Jorge – Oscar Sanchez – Tagliafico – Nafti – Eddy (Albiol 60’) – Matilla – Junatan (Pifarré 90’) – Ruso Garcia – Kike (Acciari 75`)

Madrid B :
Mejias – Juanfran – Mateos (Derik 9’) – Nacho – Casado – Alex (Borja 73’) – Mosquera – Omar – Cherysev – Jese (Lucas 87’) – Morata.

Referee : Mr. Gonzalez Fuertes. Deserves his own post.

Real Murcia 0 Girona 1

This hurts as we have been strong at home. We started well but the after 20 minutes faded badly and Girona (now we see why they are near the top) played well and deserved their lead. We could and maybe should have grabbed a draw - Girona's keeper making a string of good saves.

Mention apart for referee Mr. Valdez Aller. Truly awful and badly assisted by his linesmen. he really didn't have a clue, getting just about everything wrong. Let Girona get away with diving and blatant timewasting. The standard of refereeing in the division reaches a new low. How can a clash of heads disputing the ball be a straight red for one of the players?

Acho "One And Only" spies somehow managed to photograph Alcorcón manager Bordalás's coaching session today......here are some interesting shots....

Alcorcón 1 Real Murcia 0

Alcorcón's home record speaks for itself. It's a tough place to get a result - small ground, they prepare a shit pitch so it's difficult to play....then they proceed to play their...let's say physical style of football. Real dominated, but found it hard to get any kind of rhythm as the home side play acted, fouled and disputed every decision. Premeditated and cynical, but the referee let them get away with it.

Alcorcón :

Manu Fernandez - Nagore - Babín - Laguardia - Angel Sanchez - Fernando Sales - Sergio Mora - Abraham (Morán 76') - Juli (Camille 65') - Miguelez (calahorro 92') - Oriol Riera

Real Murcia :

Javi Jimenez - Molinero - Dos Santos (Albiol 86') - Catalá - Oscar Sanchez - Sutil - Nafti - Matilla - Acciari (Nico 63') - Saúl (Chando 72') - Kike

Goal :
1 - 0 Mora 14'

Referee : Mr. Piñeiro Crespo. Too soft on Alcorcón.

After the game Real coach Gustavo Siviero accused Alcorcón manager Pepe Bordalas of a racist insult aimed at midfielder Mehdi Nafti. Nafti confirmed this....."Moro de mierda" were the words Bordalas used. We have seen in recent cases in England that racism isn't accepted and that action is taken (Terry and Suarez). Unfortunately in Spain this isn't high on the agenda. I expect nothing will happen. I can't see what Siviero and Nafti have to gain by making a false accusation. Bordalas of course denies it, but we all know that there's no smoke without fire.

Real Murcia 1 Elche 0

Good performance and great result against a previously unbeaten Elche side. The game looked as if it was drifting towards a draw until clumsy defending gifted Real a penalty, Kike Garcia brought down by Verdes. Funny how fate or nature has a way of evening things out – Kike suffered a broken leg at Elche last season when fouled in the box. He didn’t get a penalty and then spent all year out injured. This time the referee gave the right decision, Matilla cheekily dinking the ball in Panenka style to set of wild celebrations. Elche huffed and puffed without really troubling a solid Real defence.

Real Murcia :

Javi Jiménez – Molinero – Mauro – catalá – Oscar Sanchez – Nafti (Acciari 56’) – Matilla – Nico (Kike Garcia 73’) – Jonatan (Saul 63’) – Sutil – Ruso Garcia

Elche :

Manu Herrera – Damian – Pelegrin (Verdes 82’) – Etxeita – Albacar – Rivera – Mantecón – Xumetra (Generelo 50’) – Fidel – Corominas – Powel (Pelayo 56’)

Goal :

1 – 0 Matilla (p) 83’

Referee : Mr. Mariscal Sánchez. Surprisingly enough, did rather well. Let play flow, wasn’t over-zealous, didn’t start the usual card waving show in the second half. Got the odd one wrong but they are only human. Probably the best refereeing display we have seen this season.

Att. 13.882 at the New Condomina. Best of the season so far, but well below what we should be getting for this type of game.

Next up is a tricky away game at in-form Alcorcón next weekend. This deserved victory should give our confidence a real boost.
