No Cortar

"Swords & Knives" (Espadas y Cuchillos) - Tears For Fears

Timewasting

Time - Pink Floyd

It seems that our hurry makes life pass at a speed impossible to stop. Like when we wanted to get to be 18 as soon as possible, remember? Or to August for a holiday. The same with happiness: "I will be happy when...". And we are in a hurry to have what is supposed to make us happy (it is a mirage: another objective appears, something that is what will make us truly happy, and thus we enter a vicious circle of unhappiness). How to get to “Primera” (La Liga) in Murcia.

We are in a great hurry to have Real Murcia "where it deserves to be" (sic) and, the more hurry we have, the faster we move away from that place. If it were by 'deserveometer', I think we are exactly where we have to be, in the fourth level. I know it hurts to admit it, but that's how it is. And as with any good drug addict or alcoholic, the first step to healing is acceptance, self-recognition. Product of our urgent desire to be at the top level,  did we look the other way while Samper spent way beyond our means? Yes. Have we welcomed anyone (Moro, Gálvez, even García De La Vega) apparently willing to solve our haste and desire to be happy? Yes. Do we demand speed before solid plans? Of course. All guilty, make no mistake.

Our history is one of many thorns and few laurels. Our glorious age (the 80’s) didn’t get past being mediocre. We have no muscle, we do not generate respect. We are lost in the crowd, we have no charm, not even in our own city do the newspapers or politicians (or judges) make an effort to support us. In terms of football, we have searched hurriedly for that imagined happiness like a sail in the wind, be it with City-type (Ciudad de Murcia) monstrosities, projects that only support the upward trajectory (UCAM type) or directly using the blanket of Madrid or Barça, with their reflected happiness, to cover the shortcomings of what should be our team, Real Murcia. Por favor, feliz rápido.

In Melilla, where a draw is normally an acceptable result, we got angry with that result precisely for having added the 3 points in such a hurry when we were two nil up, without even reaching the 30th minute. Then quickly blame some players who until now had had a flawless season.

Even when we have achieved the panacea of reaching Primera, we are in a hurry and we do not achieve happiness. Instead of going slowly, enjoying the ride and being humble, we started talking about “playing the UEFA cup” (or Europa League as it would be now).

When we were doing pretty well (9th), instead of enjoying ourselves, we demand that we start "playing beautiful football" before a prudent time to adapt had passed. We have never had the patience for a long lasting project that needs time to mature. Always making 20 signings in the summer, followed by another 10 in the winter. We never overcome a losing streak without breaking up a team or sacking a manager. We have never had a consistent identity and recognizable identity on the pitch. Off field, we are recognized for being poor payers, for going from courtroom to courtroom, for always being on the edge of a precipice with no return... and little else. So hungry that we swallow before chewing. With this panorama, is it surprising that the League and the Federation, in all their facets, commissions, etc., and the referees themselves, treat us with continuous distain almost instantly? Or that, when it comes to administratively relegating us, they condemn us quickly and without consideration?

I don't believe in conspiracy theories, but I do believe in the psychology, the subconscious, behind such decisions. I try to be objective, but the evidence is that, on the pitch, when making important decisions, we don’t get the rub of the green. They say that the referees are bad in this division, but they should be for everyone, and I don't see a balance. Even in Segunda, I have not seen balance. In Primera, forget it, constant abuse. Off the pitch, the League even invented ratios to relegate us in 2014 (with a minimum of 7/8 teams guilty of doing exactly the same as us, but they poured gasoline on the fire and targeted us, lest they become the target of Javier Tebas’ dictatorship). But yes, we used overspending (or what is the same, self-deception to save the time it takes to do things right) like nobody else, but we were the only one punished, with, how could it be any other way, a quickie trial.

Why do we receive so much punishment and discrimination? I think that our haste, our short-term demands and that we constantly deny ourselves the possibility to be happy and humble, both as fans, owners and the board of directors, which has developed into a bad reputation. For not having had time to develop clear values or represent anything clearly. Everything mentioned is what gives us a bad image that has permeated through Spanish football. No clear identity, no values, no success, but arrogant and demanding. Much loved by us fans, yes, but from the outside looked at with contempt. How do we turn around decades of wasting time trying to make shortcuts on healthy, logical development time, whilst we build solid foundations?

Maybe it's a matter of slow cooking. Let’s have some patience. Let's stop getting nervous about the club disappearing if we don't go up this season. That ain’t going to happen. We have been much worse off and here we are. If we do gain promotion, let’s still be patient. Let's be humble and not demand another promotion just because we are Real Murcia. We could finish right back where we came from.

Let’s have continuity. Regardless of whether promotion is achieved or not, try to get at least 15 players to continue for next season, along with the coach and the sporting director. Grow little by little. The cornerstone of the club’s future is the training centre, much more important than an express promotion. We have to take small steps. Decide our identity on the pitch. How we want to play, who is leading the project, how to impregnate the entire club, from top to bottom, with that objective. Decide our identity off the field of play. An identity of how we behave and where we are going as a club, define our values and interact with them at every step.

Have the patience that we have never had; learn to enjoy the moment, enjoy the journey. Try to slow down. In the same way, we may finally manage to happy at some time, without wasting, for having gone too fast, a time of our lives that is priceless.

O a agosto.

No tenemos músculo, no generamos respeto.

Incluso en Segunda, no he visto equilibrio.

Crecer poco a poco.

Peace And Understanding

This week yet another Real Murcia squad member appeared before the press to answer the usual boring questions. And we had yet another set of standard answers. All very "middle of the road, rock no boats" Stuff. This week it was Pablo Haro facing the usual banal line of questioning. He had this to say....

"From the first day my teammates are treating me very well. The coach is counting on me and the sensations are good. We have to continue on this path"

This got me thinking that all the players seem to say this - everything is good, everyone seems to treat each other well. All very nice. Indeed, too nice maybe. I can remember many a successful team where a week wouldn't go by without a training ground bust up. Keown or Adams were always at someone's throat if they weren't pulling their weight in training. Roy Keane would rapidly make sure there was a healthy level of competitive edge at all times. They were leaders who held the others to a standard. I'm sure Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger did not frown upon the odd fist, black eye or general handbags every once in a while.

Have to say I miss this at Real Murcia. They all get on far too well.....and as they old saying goes, "you play as you train". If it's all nice and good chums, that's how we will play - and a lot of hungrier teams will have us for lunch.

Keane, Neville, Keown or Vieira, the Monday of the week after, would all be best mates with whoever had transgressed.....as long as the weekend saw a win. That is reaching real peace and understanding.

So here's hoping for a training ground kerfuffle this week. Will show a side to us I think we are lacking; a bit of aggression.

Patience Is a Virtue

"Patience is not the ability to wait, but how you act while your waiting" (Joyce Meyer)

It's a virtue most concerned with Real Murcia (locally, at least), have never had. We want everything NOW. This has led to consistent failure, or success, but only in the very short term. Owners and directors have been guilty - How is it possible that the club still does not have a decent training facility? Easy - the short term impatience means any funds available would be spent on a striker that "guarantees" (sic.) 20 goals a year. They never do. It's also the impatience (allied with a complete lack of scruples) that led a series of owners to make every season boom or bust; spending beyond our means, and a systematic dereliction of duty as businessmen (non payment of tax and social security). It has always been the way at the club, to kick the can forward, and continue the snowball of debt, All the time being pushed in this direction by a demanding and overcritical fanbase, ravenous for signings and oblivious to the long term damage being done. All this has to change. We can't keep blaming everyone else; the powers that be, those that relegated us in the summer of 2014 to "Segunda B" with ratios invented specifically for such an outcome, are (let's admit) merely the inevitable result of our own behaviour for decades. I hated La Liga "Capo" Tebas and his cronies for what they did. It was painful and felt unfair. But now it feels like we almost deserved it.

We do now have a board of directors who are absolutely committed to paying the taxman every cent due, since the November 2018 shareholder take over. However the fan base is, seemingly and in their majority STILL anchored in the past and demanding immediate success ("buy a striker!"), despite now being (however insignificantly) a shareholder in the club. Surely this fact should mean a desire for long term stability and a road to one day seeing a dividend per share? After all, that's how shareholding in a company works, right?

The facts are that the club's income is severely limited, and it is mostly under embargo from the Tax office. Real Murcia needs €1,7m to make a down-payment in order to obtain a long term agreement to schedule repayment. The club also requires over €1,0m to lift the long term debts that could lead to bankruptcy. For long term survival the training facility that will bring local talent through will need an investment of around €1,0m. I can't see an investor coming along with €3,7m total, also, the club's statutes currently prohibit a major shareholder having absolute power (this to avoid the type of behaviours seen in the past). So it looks like we will be asked to put our hands in our pockets again with yet another share issue. Hopefully this time it will be presented correctly, be sold commercially and professionally, and be a success (unlike the 2 previous versions, where only around 10% of the share value on offer was covered.

Steve Parish, owner of Crystal Palace, spoke eloquently on the subject of patience (on the excellent "Life Goals" Podcast - Like a "Desert Island Discs" but with goals and music). Palace were in administration and dire straits when he took over, much like Real Murcia are now, but have built a solid, sustainable, model. He said:

"Running a football club is a difficult thing, running it if you are not all on the same page, if people aren't behind you and supporting you....you know.....it's easy to support a club when you win, or support a person running a club when you win, it's when you lose and the difficult moments...."

"You can punch a lot above your weight in football if everyone is pointing in the same direction, that's why our fans are soooo good, you know, they want to see the club built, and they've seen all the "let's get there quickly" schemes all fall apart, they've got fantastic patience as fans....of course they get frustrated at times....."

I still believe that in the right hands, Real Murcia is a sleeping giant, ready to be awakened. But we can't keep trying to act impatient; big clubs can do that as they have the means to satisfy their twitchiness and thirst for success. Doing just that has been endemic and damaging. Be patient.

Ascendemos, bien. No ascendemos, muerte.
