Time - Pink Floyd
It seems that our hurry makes life pass at a speed impossible to stop. Like when we wanted to get to be 18 as soon as possible, remember? Or to August for a holiday. The same with happiness: "I will be happy when...". And we are in a hurry to have what is supposed to make us happy (it is a mirage: another objective appears, something that is what will make us truly happy, and thus we enter a vicious circle of unhappiness). How to get to “Primera” (La Liga) in Murcia.
We are in a great hurry to have Real Murcia "where it deserves to be" (sic) and, the more hurry we have, the faster we move away from that place. If it were by 'deserveometer', I think we are exactly where we have to be, in the fourth level. I know it hurts to admit it, but that's how it is. And as with any good drug addict or alcoholic, the first step to healing is acceptance, self-recognition. Product of our urgent desire to be at the top level, did we look the other way while Samper spent way beyond our means? Yes. Have we welcomed anyone (Moro, Gálvez, even García De La Vega) apparently willing to solve our haste and desire to be happy? Yes. Do we demand speed before solid plans? Of course. All guilty, make no mistake.
Our history is one of many thorns and few laurels. Our glorious age (the 80’s) didn’t get past being mediocre. We have no muscle, we do not generate respect. We are lost in the crowd, we have no charm, not even in our own city do the newspapers or politicians (or judges) make an effort to support us. In terms of football, we have searched hurriedly for that imagined happiness like a sail in the wind, be it with City-type (Ciudad de Murcia) monstrosities, projects that only support the upward trajectory (UCAM type) or directly using the blanket of Madrid or Barça, with their reflected happiness, to cover the shortcomings of what should be our team, Real Murcia. Por favor, feliz rápido.
In Melilla, where a draw is normally an acceptable result, we got angry with that result precisely for having added the 3 points in such a hurry when we were two nil up, without even reaching the 30th minute. Then quickly blame some players who until now had had a flawless season.
Even when we have achieved the panacea of reaching Primera, we are in a hurry and we do not achieve happiness. Instead of going slowly, enjoying the ride and being humble, we started talking about “playing the UEFA cup” (or Europa League as it would be now).
When we were doing pretty well (9th), instead of enjoying ourselves, we demand that we start "playing beautiful football" before a prudent time to adapt had passed. We have never had the patience for a long lasting project that needs time to mature. Always making 20 signings in the summer, followed by another 10 in the winter. We never overcome a losing streak without breaking up a team or sacking a manager. We have never had a consistent identity and recognizable identity on the pitch. Off field, we are recognized for being poor payers, for going from courtroom to courtroom, for always being on the edge of a precipice with no return... and little else. So hungry that we swallow before chewing. With this panorama, is it surprising that the League and the Federation, in all their facets, commissions, etc., and the referees themselves, treat us with continuous distain almost instantly? Or that, when it comes to administratively relegating us, they condemn us quickly and without consideration?
I don't believe in conspiracy theories, but I do believe in the psychology, the subconscious, behind such decisions. I try to be objective, but the evidence is that, on the pitch, when making important decisions, we don’t get the rub of the green. They say that the referees are bad in this division, but they should be for everyone, and I don't see a balance. Even in Segunda, I have not seen balance. In Primera, forget it, constant abuse. Off the pitch, the League even invented ratios to relegate us in 2014 (with a minimum of 7/8 teams guilty of doing exactly the same as us, but they poured gasoline on the fire and targeted us, lest they become the target of Javier Tebas’ dictatorship). But yes, we used overspending (or what is the same, self-deception to save the time it takes to do things right) like nobody else, but we were the only one punished, with, how could it be any other way, a quickie trial.
Why do we
receive so much punishment and discrimination? I think that our haste, our
short-term demands and that we constantly deny ourselves the possibility to be
happy and humble, both as fans, owners and the board of directors, which has developed
into a bad reputation. For not having had time to develop clear values or
represent anything clearly. Everything mentioned is what gives us a bad image
that has permeated through Spanish football. No clear identity, no values, no
success, but arrogant and demanding. Much loved by us fans, yes, but from the
outside looked at with contempt. How do we turn around decades of wasting time
trying to make shortcuts on healthy, logical development time, whilst we build
solid foundations?
Maybe it's a matter of slow cooking. Let’s have some patience. Let's stop getting nervous about the club disappearing if we don't go up this season. That ain’t going to happen. We have been much worse off and here we are. If we do gain promotion, let’s still be patient. Let's be humble and not demand another promotion just because we are Real Murcia. We could finish right back where we came from.
Let’s have
continuity. Regardless of whether promotion is achieved or not, try to get at least 15 players to continue for next season, along with the coach and the sporting director. Grow little by little. The cornerstone of the club’s future is the training centre, much more important than an express promotion. We have to take small steps. Decide our identity on the pitch. How we want to play, who is leading the project, how to impregnate the entire club, from top to bottom, with that objective. Decide our identity off the field of play. An identity of how we behave and where we are going as a club, define our values and interact with them at every step.
Have the patience that we
have never had; learn to enjoy the moment,
enjoy the journey. Try to slow down. In the same way, we may finally
manage to happy at some time, without wasting, for having gone too fast, a time
of our lives that is priceless.
